Subaru says it plans to issue a voluntary recall of 1.3 million vehicles in the U.S. because in certain situations in some cars and SUVs, the brake lights do not illuminate as expected, even though the brakes are working properly.

The recall will include certain models among 2008 to 2016 Impreza cars, and 2013 to 2017 Crosstrek and 2014 to 2016 Forester SUVs.

The automaker told Consumer Reports that there have been approximately 20 reported incidents related to this issue. The problem is caused by lubricants or cleaning products being applied near the brake pedal, Subaru says.

This notice comes ahead of a formal recall announcement. The company said that it plans to contact owners within 60 days.

We will update this article as more details become available.

Details

The vehicles: 2008 to 2016 Impreza cars, and 2013 to 2017 Crosstrek and 2014 to 2016 Forester SUVs.

The problem: The safety concern stems from the use of consumer products containing silicone that can seep into the brake lamp switch housing and deposit a layer on the switch contact. If the contact switch loses conductivity to the terminal, it may result in the rear brake lights not illuminating.

The fix: Subaru will reach out to affected customers, and dealers will replace the switch at no charge to owners.

How to contact the manufacturer: Owners can call Subaru at 800-782-2783.

National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s campaign number: Not yet available.
