How to submit a letter to the editor to The Newport Daily News

We welcome our readers' views. Here are the guidelines for submitting a letter to The Daily News.

• Each letter must bear the writer's full name, full address and telephone number or email address (for verification purposes only). We will not publish a letter unless a phone number or email address is provided.

• We correct errors in spelling, grammar and punctuation, and edit letters to conform to Daily News style. We may condense letters for brevity.

• Letters must be no more than 450 words.

• Guest Views are accepted from people writing from a place of authority on the topic. Guest Views are limited to 750 words.

• Guest Views are not accepted on issues appearing on an election ballot.

• Letters critical of candidates for elected office or containing information about a candidate that can't be verified will not appear in the edition closest to the election, as it does not allow time for rebuttal prior to the election.

• Letters from candidates for office about themselves will not be published.

• Letters of endorsement of candidates or ballot issues are welcome within the guidelines for all letters.

• We will run no more than two letters per author per month.

• All letters must be sent via email to editor@newportri.com.

• Letters on topics local to Newport County will be given first preference, followed by those of R.I. interest and then national. We will run as many letters in print as space allows, within that order of preference.

• Letters must be civil. Those attacking a person or group will not be published.

• Letters that appear to be part of a letter-writing campaign will not be accepted.

• To be included in the upcoming Saturday paper, they must be received by noon the Thursday before.
