A subway rider was stabbed in the stomach by a total stranger Thursday when their verbal argument that began on the train turned violent on a Manhattan subway platform, cops said.

When the southbound No. 2 train pulled into the 72nd Street subway station the assailant stepped off the train, turned around and knifed the 62-year-old man around 5:33 p.m. It is not known what sparked their argument, cops said.

The suspect fled the platform — with the wounded victim chasing after him, cops said. The attacker got out of the station and was still on the loose Thursday night.

Medics took the victim to St. Luke’s hospital in stable condition, cops said.

The suspect was described as 6-feet tall, wearing a blue mask, a grey hoodie and blue jeans.

By the end of June, major crimes reported in the transit system were up 52% compared with the same period last year, NYPD data shows.
