Suds and spuds: 5 places to watch Sunday's Super Bowl on Cape Cod

Even though New England does not have a team in Super Bowl XVII, fans are likely to tune in for football's biggest game, Rihanna heading the halftime show and commercials from the 57th annual game.

Punsters estimate just shy of 100 million people will tune in — about a third of the U.S. population.

The commercials are often one of the highlights, selling for upwards of $7 million for 30 seconds and bringing out stars over the years from Cher to Alicia Silverstone to Rob Gronkowski. Here's an early peek at this year's ads and memorable blasts from the past.

Whether you have a rooting interest in the Philadelphia Eagles or the Kansas City Chiefs, you'll find fellow fans gathering for the love of the game — not to mention the love of pizza, wings and burgers.

Here are a half-dozen Cape Cod bars known for their sports-minded atmosphere and their larger-than-life TVs so you can feel like you are on the field with FOX correspondents as they cover the 6:30 p.m. action at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.

DJ's Family Sports Pub, 165 Yarmouth Road, Hyannis,  508-775-9464

At DJ's Family Sports Pub on Yarmouth Road in Hyannis, co-owner Eithne Carlin has said her family-run, family-oriented sports bar has perfected the formula for watching the game.

Carlin says her restaurant has been following sports for 17 years with its 400,000 TVs.

"The years part is true," she said, "but the 400,000 TVs is just my Irish humor."

Back in 2019, Carlin said, “Super Bowl Sunday, we’ve got it down to a science. It’s one of our most exciting days of the year … and we live for it."

Football and wings just go together, she adds, and filling all the orders can be frantic — but enough of an adrenalin-filled experience that employees volunteer to be there, and family and former employees travel to help. “It’s crazy … (and) a lot of fun.”

At DJ's in Hyannis, each booth has its own, individually controlled TV, and the family's Falmouth location, on Main Street, also has about 20 TVs, although not at the tables.

"We have the ability to cover all the sports all the time. We use Direct TV so we can get up to six games. A lot of fans who have moved to the Cape still root for their home teams," Carlin said, noting that Falmouth has a strong Green Bay Packer fan base while Hyannis has a rooting contingent for the Buffalo Bills.

Dino's, celebrating 33 years in business and one of the most established sports bars on Cape Cod, has a 96-inch television and a string of smaller TVs over the bar so you don't have to crane to watch the play.

In addition to its reputation as a sports bar, Dino's has an outside deck with live entertainment in the warmer months and a pizza business. There are specialties, including a Mexican pizza, calzones, steak tips and a full slate of subs. To consider for the Super Bowl: you can get a large cheese pizza with a pitcher of beer for $25.99 ($2 extra for each topping.)

Portside Tavern, 72 North St., Hyannis, 508-534-9600

Portside Tavern on North Street in Hyannis has a 10-by-12-foot TV screen hanging over the bar as well as 26 other, smaller TVs. Run by the Murphy family who previously operated pizza shops on the South Shore, Portside is known for its bar pizza, a personal-sized, thin-crust pizza with a distinctive black lace edge. The "lace" is actually spilled and burnt sauce, which is intentional and delicious.

Dan, one of the bartenders who rushed off before giving his last name, works inside the enclosed bar where, over his head, life-sized football players will decide the contest on Sunday. "We have the best place to watch the game from," he says.

The Land Ho!, with only three TVs, would seem to be an outlier but the crowd's conviviality makes up the difference at this neighborhood bar, run by the Murphy family.

"Super Bowl is not usually the busiest day of the year for us because people have parties at home, but since the Patriots are not in it this year, we may see fewer home parties and a busier night for us," John Murphy said Thursday.

Murphy said he will most likely make wings Sunday since that's what he normally makes on Sunday.

You'll find lots of company and plenty of opinions at the highly polished wood bar, which tends to get shoulder-to-shoulder busy.

Brewster Pizza House and Sports Bar, 2655 Main St., Brewster; 508-896-3341; brewsterpizza.com

Expect to find the 10 TVs in the main bar tuned into the Super Bowl Sunday night in this neighborhood bar where regulars often come to watch one sport or another.

There are also TVs in a game room that offers dartboards (the Cape Cod Dart League plays there), ping pong, a ball game called “baskets” and cornhole options.

Besides a full bar, there are 10 beers on tap, including three local beers. Besides pizza, the menu includes calzones, burgers, sandwiches, salads and appetizers.

Most importantly, the bar is open until midnight so you won't have to leave midway through the Super Bowl, which was a problem for some restaurants that close at 9 p.m.
