Sue Zwahlen to become Modesto’s next mayor after opponent concedes

A candidate is declaring victory in Modesto’s run-off election for mayor. The mail-in only voting ended Tuesday night, and the Stanislaus County Registrar posted the first results. Former Modesto School Board Member Sue Zwahlen leads by nearly 5,000 votes. She declared victory on Tuesday night on Facebook, writing “I ran because I want to improve the quality of life for all Modestans and that is exactly what I plan to do. Together we can do this! I hope you will all join men as we give Modesto a fresh start.” The mayor-elect later sat down with KCRA 3 to speak about how she plans to govern. “We have to work so closely with community partners and I have done that with my school board experience and just a lot community involvement that I've had. I will continue in those efforts,” she said. The other candidate Doug Ridenour conceded Tuesday, saying he’s far enough behind in votes that he doesn't expect to catch up.
