Suffolk woman wins $100k in Va. Lottery New Year’s Raffle

SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A Suffolk woman began 2024 with 100,000 reasons to celebrate.

Stacy Byrd hopped in Virginia’s New Year’s Millionaire Raffle at the last minute. She had never brought a ticket for the annual raffle and decided to give it try.

Byrd bought her winning ticket at the Food Lion at 1524 Holland Road in Suffolk less than 90 minutes before raffle sales ended.

That ticket ended up being one of seven to win $100,000. The others were purchased in Henrico, Lynchburg, Manassas and Stafford.

“I started shaking!” she told Virginia Lottery officials. “I told my friend, and she said, ‘You’re lying! You’re lying!’”

Byrd works in retail and plans to pay bills with her winnings and maybe buy a new car.

All Virginia Lottery profits go to K-12 education in Virginia. Suffolk received more than $10.3 million in Lottery funds for K-12 education last fiscal year.
