Suicide prevention training program to be offered

Sep. 16—HENDERSON — Healthcare providers are invited to participate in training to improve their capacity to deal with people in crisis. The training is free.

Vaya Health will be offering suicide prevention training from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 11 at Baskerville Funeral Home, which is at 104 S. Chestnut St. in Henderson.

In this training, you'll learn:

—How to ask the right questions about suicide.

—How to persuade a person to get help.

—How to refer an individual to the right resource.

The training will be conducted by Danielle Woodall and Tim Simmons. Woodall is a community training specialist who has been affiliated with Vaya Health and Cardinal Innovations Healthcare since 2007. (Vaya Health and Cardinal Innovations consolidated in 2021 to become Vaya Health.)

Before joining Cardinal, Weedall worked as a social worker with the Alamance-Burlington School System.

Simmons is a community educator who has been with Vaya Health (and Cardinal) since 2012.

Charlie Baskerville Jr., owner of the funeral home, said the suicide prevention training is the first of several training programs that will be offered over the next four months. The second Tuesday of each month will be devoted to a topic of concern to healthcare providers, he said.

Vaya Health is a health organization that connects individuals with behavioral health and intellectual or developmental disabilities with healthcare providers. It maintains a network of highly qualified providers who are able to respond to individual and family needs on a local level. Vaya also educates the community about mental health, substance abuse and intellectual/developmental disorders, as well as services available in the community to deal with those issues.
