Note: This article contains mild spoilers for the season nine premiere of Suits.

Whether we like to admit it or not, every moment spent watching the final season of Suits is a moment in which we hold out hope for an appearance from Meghan Markle – however unlikely.

And, considering the Duchess of Sussex has recently welcomed a baby boy with Prince Harry, that's pretty damn unlikely.

The Suits season nine premiere, however, did feature Meghan's character Rachel Zane, whose last appearance on the show was in season seven's romantic finale.

Following on from season eight's passionate – and long-overdue – cliffhanger, Suits revisited the still-together Harvey Specter and Donna Paulsen in its latest episode. But that's not the only thing that was revisited.

Sharing the exciting news that the pair had (finally) moved forward in their relationship, Donna made an important call to – who else? – Rachel, to tell her that "it happened".

Elsewhere in the episode, Harvey invited Donna round to Mike and Rachel's old apartment, which had been lying empty.

Rather than renting it out, as he previously promised, it turns out Harvey had in fact created a fake tenant and footed the rental bill. Why? In case Mike and Rachel ever return.

Unfortunately, the chances of a comeback for Rachel are admittedly slim, with Suits creator Aaron Korsh recently admitting that he doesn't see it happening.

"There is always a chance [Meghan] is going to pick up the phone and call me and say, 'Can I come back?', and if she did she would be welcomed back with arms wide open," he said.

"But no, l don't see that happening."

Suits airs on USA in the US and on Netflix in the UK.
