Sullins begins Olympic Development Youth Track Camp

ADRIAN – Blissfield track and field coach Calvin Sullins is hosting a track and field camp this week at Adrian College and events kicked off Tuesday with a free festival.

Sullins, a Sand Creek graduate who competed as a decathlete at Siena Heights University, has been track coach at Blissfield for two seasons. He is also an assistant track coach at Madonna University and operates the Wolfpack Sports Performance.

The Olympic Development Youth Track Camp’s summer festival and include kid carnival games and food trucks. An elite long jump competition was held, and 2020 Tokyo Olympian Steven Bastien was on hand.

“I have friends coming in from all over the country to speak and help out at the camp,” Sullins said. “There are some great coaches and great athletes that will be here.”

After Tuesday’s festivities, Sullins and the Wolfpack Sports Performance group will put on the 2022 National Olympic Development Camp, also on the Adrian College campus.

The speaker lineup throughout the week includes professional athletes, counselors, coaches and Olympians. The camp itself covers every event in track and field, from hurdles and sprints to hammer throw and javelin. Every day begins with an education symposium and question-and-answer forum. The afternoon sessions include technical training from high-level athletes.

Madonna University assistant coach Nia Henderson, the Michigan Elite throwing coach, will hold a camp within the camp for the throw events. Stacy Latnie, the 2021 NAIA national track coach of the year, will also be there. Athletes like 2021 NCAA Division II decathlon champion and Olympic trails competitor Sam Black will be in attendance as well.

“We have Olympians, Olympic coaches, a lot of all-americans and nutritionists and even sports psychologists,” Sullins said.
