Summer camps in Louisville

Summer school has become more popular since the pandemic as families and schools have worked to combat the learning loss plaguing students once their schools were forced to closed.

Aside from getting children out of the house where they can further their communication skills while nurturing friendships, summer programs can help them retain what could be otherwise lost, with research showing students lose about 40% of what they learned at school over the summer.

For families interested in summer school programs, the district will host its Backpack League again, after enrolling more than 11,000 students last year. The league is free for all students and will be hosted at nearly 20 school sites throughout the county. Priority registration - for students of color and those who struggled with absenteeism - will open April 10, with registration opening for all other families April 17.

The district's Diversity, Equity and Poverty Department also will play host to camps focused on literature coupled with photography, fencing, karate and DJ'ing, which will be open to third, fourth and fifth graders.

Other summer programs include the city's Parks and Recreations camp, which is open to children ages 6-12. A $20 fee is due at registration, along with a $50 per child weekly camp cost. Registration closes March 31.

The YMCA also offers several summer camp options, serving children ages 3-16. Prices vary by age and the camp selected, and financial assistance is available for some.

Other summer camp options include:

The following school year is set to start Aug. 9.
