Summer bummer, Boise: This major outdoor concert has been canceled (yep, another one)

Summer in the Boise area just got a little less heavy.

Headbanging rock bands Godsmack and Staind have canceled their co-headlining show at Ford Idaho Center Amphitheater in Nampa.

The concert had been scheduled for Friday, Aug. 18.

It’s the second major outdoor show that has been nixed in recent weeks. In May, Rainbow Kitten Surprise pulled the plug on its planned gig at Outlaw Field at the Idaho Botanical Garden.

On social media last week, Godsmack indicated that trouble might be in the air. “Regarding the Salt Lake City, Nampa and Ridgefield shows,” the group posted. “... We unfortunately ran into some routing issues.”

All three of those shows have been canceled.

“Bummer for sure,” said Creston Thornton, president of promoter Live Nation’s mountain region.

Ticket sales in Nampa had been strong, he said.

It’s a disappointing turn of events for fans who grew up listening to both veteran groups over the decades — on CD, on streaming services and on radio stations such as 100.3 FM The X in Boise.

“Godsmack has more Top 10 rock songs than Foo Fighters or their hometown heroes, Aerosmith,” the band’s official bio brags. “Stretching back to their four-times platinum self-titled debut, initially recorded in 1996 for $2,500, the veteran band’s catalog of hits is enough to fill a marathon set without running out. Songs like ‘I Stand Alone,’ ‘Awake’ and ‘Voodoo’ are certified anthems deeply encoded into hard rock’s DNA.”

Staind, formed in 1995, has enjoyed hits such as “It’s Been Awhile,” “Outside” and “So Far Away.”

Both bands have been to Boise before. Godsmack’s most recent visit was in 2018, when it performed with Shinedown at what is now called ExtraMile Arena. Godsmack, Staind and Shinedown all appeared at the Idaho Center Amphitheater in 2012 at the Uproar Festival.

Godsmack has sold more than 20 million records worldwide, according to a media release; Staind has sold more than 15 million.

Godsmack’s most recent Boise appearance was in 2018.
