Fall River cafe gives back

One new South End eatery is stepping up to serve the community. In an effort to help struggling families, Christopher's Cafe has announced a special offer that launches Thursday. Every weekday from 11 a.m. to noon., kids 16 and younger are invited to drop by 1816 South Main St., Fall River, and have lunch on them. That includes a free slice of flatbread cheese or pepperoni pizza, a boxed water and a piece of fruit to go. According to a July 5 post on Christopher's Cafe's Facebook page: "We love our neighborhood and we especially love seeing everyone walking around. Having said that, we don’t want anyone to struggle or want because they relied on school lunches ... We want everyone to eat and be happy!" Run by owner Christopher Silvia, the eatery opened its doors in March at the site of the former Jeff's Ice Cream, which over the past few months has transformed into an upscale, intimate cafe space. It features constantly evolving and unique breakfast, lunch and dinner offerings, in addition to hosting private events and catering. "We fly by what is creative, seasonal, local, fresh and doable. We relish in the fact that we are not traditional and or/ordinary," according to Christopher's website. Breakfast is here to stay at Missing Link BBQ in Somerset. Now available Saturdays and Sundays from 7 to 11 a.m., their early bird menu features items such as the Bigfoot Bennie (grilled open faced Portuguese muffin topped with a local fried egg, Carolina cheese sauce, scallions and choice of meat), Link Plate (2 local eggs made your way, shreds grilled with onions, BBQ rub and smoked lard, two corn cakes, and your choice of meat), and various delicious dishes such as Foghorn Leghorn (spicy Texas BBQ glazed pulled chicken, scallions and pickles with smoked jalapeno and garlic ranch, hot sauce and hot honey). The Southern style BBQ joint, which marked its first anniversary last week, also recently introduced its first-ever Cake of the Week to its breakfast menu. This weekend's sweet, corn cake creation, available July 8 and 9, are the S'more Cakes, with chocolate ganache, whipped marshmallow cream, chocolate chunks, crushed graham cracker, mini marshmallows, and a dollop of whipped cream. Portuguese spot returns with new owners at helm

With endings come new beginnings, especially at one popular Portuguese restaurant in Westport. Portas Da Cidade Restaurant and Lounge recently announced that it would be changing hands, as husband and wife team Olivia and Mark Stone step away from the popular Route 6 dining spot. They posted a goodbye letter late last week on the Portas Facebook page, thanking customers and staff and ensuring patrons that things will be "business as usual with younger energetic owners" Cameron Olivier and Steven Lourenco, both longtime Portas employees, at the helm. Staff will remain the same as well as the kitchen team led by Chef Ruben assisted by Chef Santana, a recent Portas post states. They are closed for vacation and will reopen under new ownership on July 19.
