As summer falls away, September has hot air balloons, Boise Pride, football and festivals

School is back in session, and fall is almost here!

You wouldn’t really know it by the weather, though. Still a bit toasty. Still feels very much like summer — because it is. And considering all of the events September offers, that’s fitting.

Cooler temperatures (hopefully), cozy clothes and the start of seasonal drinks (hello, pumpkin spiced lattes) will be here soon enough. In the meantime, the final weeks of summer bring fan favorites to the calendar, one right after another.

The Spirit of Boise Balloon Classic takes place Wednesday-Sunday, Aug. 30 through Sept. 3. Check out morning hot air balloon launches in Ann Morrison Park and the Nite Glow Spectacular at 8:05 p.m. Friday, Sept. 1. Come down early for the spectacular (5:30 p.m.) for food, vendors and music.

The ever-popular Art in the Park is Sept. 8-10 at Julia Davis Park. Celebrate the Boise Pride Festival the same weekend at Cecil D. Andrus Park downtown. Get ready to head to Camel’s Back Park for the Hyde Park Street Fair Sept. 16-18.

How about some music? The weekly concert series Tuesdays on the Creek at Indian Creek Plaza wraps up this month and the Open Air Summer series is still going strong at Ste. Chapelle. The Flipside Fest, brought to you by the Treefort folks, returns at Visual Arts Collective Sept. 22-24 with around 80 local and touring bands. And new this year, Potato Days, a spud-tacular festival Sept. 22-23 at Julius M. Kleiner Memorial Park, features music, food, french fry competition, potato art and more.

Got a cravin’ for bacon? Who doesn’t! Taste a variety of bacon creations at the Bacon and Beer Festival on Saturday, Sept. 9, at Expo Idaho. And wash down all the porky goodness with a brew or cider from 25 local/regional breweries.

Ready for pumpkins? The Lowe Family Farmstead in Kuna starts Saturday, Sept. 16. Choose that special pumpkin from an already-picked selection or take a hayride to the patch and find your own. There’s also a corn maze, corn poppers (jumping pillows), a feed mill ropes course, train rides, farmyard games and more — perfect for a family outing.

Lastly, September means that college football is back! Boise State’s first game is Saturday, Sept. 2, in Seattle against a top-10 University of Washington team. The Broncos’ first home game is Saturday, Sept. 9, against UCF. Kickoff is 5 p.m. at Albertsons Stadium for that one. There is a home game on Saturday, Sept. 16, as well.
