Starting July 16, Footnotes in Burlington Public Library, 210 Court St., is saluting Oprah Winfrey's impact on reading and literacy with seven free, weekly book drawings.

Each weekend, Footnotes will give away two donated books recommended by Oprah's Book Club since 1996, the year Winfrey's book club launched.

Entry forms will be available at Footnotes during regular hours, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

People can fill out as many entries as they wish, as long as the forms are not photocopies.

On July 16 and the following six Saturdays, two winners will be picked at 1 p.m. from the entries.

Winners do not need to be present. There is no fee for entering the drawings.

"Oprah Winfrey's love of books has been a force for good," said Ron Givens, manager of the non-profit Footnotes, which sells used books, DVDs, CDs, and magazines. "We wanted to recognize her impact and, at the same time, do something good for library patrons, the library, and the shop."

"We are lucky that generous people in our community have donated all of these Oprah books," said Givens.

For years it’s been known that if Oprah picks your book, it's guaranteed to be a success.

The Book Club, now on Apple TV+ as part of its third incarnation, has thrown its support behind more than 90 books that have sold, by one estimate, well over 70 million copies. Winfrey's picks have regularly launched titles onto the bestseller lists.

Footnotes is a project of the non-profit Friends of the Burlington Public Library.

"Everything we sell in the shop has been donated to us. If anyone has books, DVDs, CDs, and magazines in good condition that they no longer need, we would be grateful if these folks want to donate them to us," said Givens.

Footnotes has not received any consideration from Winfrey, her Harpo production company, or any of the media projects overseen by Winfrey and her companies.
