Summer reading program offers prizes and rewards

Jun. 1—LENOIR — Caldwell County Public Library kicked off its Summer Reading Program at all three of is locations on Tuesday (May 31). Readers of all ages can earn books, prizes, or other rewards for meeting their summer reading goals.

The Summer Reading Program promotes literacy and a love of reading while helping students avoid the "summer slide," where they lose knowledge that was gained during the school year.

The program is sponsored by the Friends of the Library. The Friends of the Library provide funds for the library's special guests, events, and activities. Local businesses have provided reading incentives including tickets to Tweetsie Railroad, Grandfather Mountain, Golden Ticket Cinemas, a $25 gift card to Shake-N-Dog, treats from Domino's, McDonald's, Krispy Kreme, Pelican's Snoballs, and many more.

Those who wish to participate should stop by any Caldwell County Public Library branch to pick up summer reading materials.

Children (birth to 12 years old) can earn free books and prizes for reading. The library hosts over 100 fun events and activities, including special guests this summer. Participants should stop by a library branch to pick up a registration packet, including a reading log. Participants will log their reading. All reading counts, including graphic novels, ebooks, and audiobooks.

Children (3 years old and older) get a book for every 300 minutes read (up to 1,200 minutes) and $1 in book bucks for every 30 minutes read. Children can use the book bucks to buy prizes from the prize catalog, while supplies last.

Little ones (birth to 2 years old) get a book for every 15 days read (up to 60 days) and earn $2 in book bucks for every three days read. All children can use book bucks to buy prizes from the prize catalog, while supplies last. When the reading log is complete, participants are entered into the library's end-of-summer prize drawing. Reading logs must be turned in by 5:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 12 to be eligible for the prize drawing.

Teens (13 to 18) will receive a Summer Reading bag that contains summer-time goodies and a Summer Reading bookmark. Teen participants will record the books read on the bookmark. After teens read seven books, they bring the completed bookmark back to any branch to get a free book and a chance to win the Grand Prize. The last day to return a completed bookmark is Saturday, Aug. 13.

Adult participants will participate in the Summer Reading Program through Bookopoly. For each Bookopoly completed, the participants name will be entered into a drawing for a grand prize. To complete a Bookopoly, participants must read three books in the same color category. To receive a Caldwell County Public Library bag for participation and to be entered in the drawing, the Bookopoly boards must be returned by Saturday, Aug. 13.
