Summer solstice event raises awareness about Alzheimer's disease

A summer solstice event is seeking to raise awareness about Alzheimer's disease by using the longest day of the year to "fight the darkness of Alzheimer's."

The Longest Day, which will take place on June 21 on the southwest side of Lake Lorraine from 4:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., will have activities and music for families while also educating about Alzheimer's and honoring those who've battled the disease and their families, according to a press release.

All the activities will take place on the Lake Walk, according to the release.

There will be yard games, paddle board and kayak rentals, trivia, multiple drawings and prizes, according to the release. People are also encouraged to decorate Luminary bags that will be list at dusk and placed on the Lake Walk.

Food trucks like Let Me Be Frank, the Lunch Box and the SDSU Ice Cream Truck will also be onsite throughout the event.

June is Alzheimer's and Brain Awareness Month, according to the release. More than 18,000 people in South Dakota are living with Alzheimer's Disease.

Below is a schedule of events.

  • 4:30 p.m.-9:30 p.m.: Yard games and Luminary decorating and placement.

  • 4:30 p.m.-6:30 p.m.: Live music from Arlinda Peacock

  • 6:30 p.m.-9:30 p.m.: DJ music from Q Productions

  • Dusk: Lighting of Luminaries
