It's storm season and several have already passed through causing outages in Cincinnati and around the state.
Portable power generators can be a handy solution during these outages. Generators are usually powered by gas, propane or either. Some can be solar-powered.

If you think you may need to use your power generator, make sure you have enough fuel on hand. If you have a solar generator, make sure it's charged.
The first step in setting up your generator is gauging how much power you need to use. Most people want to keep their refrigerators and lights on, as well as be able to charge devices.
It's important to make note of how much power you need to avoid overloading the power generator.
Where should I put my generator?
Gas or propane-powered generators should be placed outside, at least 20 feet from the house. It should sit on a flat, sturdy surface, and exhaust should vent away from the house's windows and doors.
Solar generators don't emit carbon monoxide, which means they can be placed indoors as long as it's a dry area away from high temperatures. Check your generator manual for more details.
How do I plug in my generator?
Generators require specifically made heavy-duty extension cords, so make sure you're using these. For gas-powered generators, run the cords through a window or door, but don't plug them into the generator yet.

How do I turn on my generator?
Solar generators turn on with a button or a switch, but fuel-powered generators are a little more complex.
For fuel-powered generators:
Make sure the fuel tank is full and there's no cords plugged into the generator.
Turn the fuel valve to on.
Turn the on/off switch to on.
Find the choke, which usually looks like a lever. Pull it to the choke position, about a quarter or a half of the way open to let in minimal air.
Hold down the start switch until the generator starts.
Slowly push the choke handle into the run position (fully open). Let the generator run for a few minutes before plugging anything into it.
How do I plug items into my generator?
You may need to plug in items to your generator in order of most power needed to least power needed. For example, you may need to plug in your refrigerator first and let it run for a bit before plugging in anything else. Check your manual for specific details for your generator.
Each item should be connected to the generator extension cord, then you can plug the cord into the generator.
How do I refuel my generator?
To refuel a generator, turn off all electronics and appliances connected to it. Let it continue running for a bit before turning the on/off switch to off. Turn the fuel switch off and unplug the extension cords.
Finally, you should allow the generator to cool down before adding more fuel.
For solar generators, connect solar panels and place it in an area with lots of sunlight. You may be able to keep devices plugged in while it is charging, depending on your generator.
