Summer sunflowers: Check out these flower fields and farms around Charlotte.
Summertime is finally here, which means it’s also the perfect time to get outdoors and scope out sunflowers.
According to the state Department of Agriculture, sunflowers will grow pretty much anytime there’s warm weather, but sunflower season in North Carolina is generally from mid-July into August.
While the flowers can bloom from spring through fall, there are several places you can check them out that aren’t too far from Charlotte.
Here’s a list of local sunflower fields and farms and what you need to know before you go.

Bush-n-Vine Farm
Location: 1650 Filbert Hwy, York, SC 29745
Hours: Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-6 p.m.; Saturday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m.
Cost: $2
Bush-n-Vine Farm’s sunflowers will be in bloom from mid-September through early October. Admission to the sunflower field includes one stem per person, but you can purchase more starting at $2.
Draper Wildlife Management Area
Location: 1080 Draper Road, McConnells, SC 29726
Hours: Open year-round during daylight hours
Cost: Free
Draper Wildlife Management area, a popular destination to see sunflowers each year, is located in York County. While access to the 806 acre property is free and open to the public daily, guests are asked not to pick, cut, knock down or cause any harm to the sunflowers.
Howard Family Farm
Location: 250 Crater Rd #9290, Harmony, NC 28634
Hours: Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.; Saturday, 9 a.m.-1 p.m.
Cost: Admission is $5. Price varies for flower picking.
Howard Family Farm has several flowers available to see and pick, including sunflowers. You can also build your own bouquet for an additional cost. The sunflower field will be in bloom from mid-July through the fall.
Lineberger’s Maple Springs Farm
Location: 906 Dallas Stanley Hwy, Dallas, NC 28034
Hours: Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-6:30 p.m.; Saturday, 9 a.m.-6 p.m.; Sunday, 12-6 p.m.
Cost: Admission is free. Price varies for flower picking.
Lineberger’s Maple Springs Farm usually has sunflowers in harvest in October. You can visit to get a pic with the blooms or pick your own to take home.
McLawland Farms LLC
Location: 8632 Reedy Creek Rd, Charlotte, NC 28215
Hours: Thursday, 10 a.m.-12 p.m. and 6:30-8 p.m.; Saturday, 9 a.m.-12 p.m. and 6-8:30 p.m.; Sunday, 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
Cost: Price varies for flower picking.
McLawland Farms LLC is a ‘u-pick’ farm that has sunflowers and dozens of other flowers in bloom this season. Summer flower picking is in full swing, and sunflowers are expected to last through mid-July. Appointments are required and can be made online.
Oddie’s Sunflower Field
Location: 2955 Oddie Rd, Salisbury, NC 28146
Hours: Every day during daylight hours
Cost: Free, donations accepted
Oddie’s Sunflower Field is open everyday for visitors to take photos, pick sunflowers and stroll through the flower field. You can also bring outside food and picnic on the property.
Wise Acres Organic Farm
Location: 4701 Hartis Rd, Indian Trail, NC 28079
Hours: Thursday-Friday, 5:30 p.m.-sunset; Saturday, 8:30 a.m.-12 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.-sunset; Sunday, 8:30 a.m.-12 p.m.
Cost: $3; 2 and under are free.
Wise Acres’ summer sunflowers will be in bloom through July 17, then will be back later for the fall season. Take photos, cut flowers and even create your own bouquet of blossoms from the farm. Reservations are required and can be made online.
