Summer Youth Classes at SRC Canton Campus

CANTON — The Spoon River College Office of Community Outreach is offering a variety of classes for youth in Canton.

“Balloon Art” will be held Tuesday, June 7, 1 to 3 p.m.

Have you ever wondered what kinds of things you could make out of balloons? This is the class for you! They’ll use some long balloons for shaping, and some round balloons for art projects. Instructor is Christine Wright and it is for those entering grades first through sixth.

“DIY Chalk Bombs” will be held Thursday, June 9,  2 to 3:30 p.m.

Do you love water balloons? Well, let’s take it up a notch and make Chalk Bombs! Students will use sidewalk chalk to create targets, and then throw water balloons filled with food coloring, water, and corn starch to “explode” into bright colors onto the targets. Students will receive instructions to make more chalk bombs at home. Instructors are Andrea Barbknecht and Stephanie Howerter. This is for those entering grades first through sixth.

“Critters” will be held Thursday, June 16, 6 to 7:30 p.m.

Meet and learn about animals native to this area! Critters usually include fish, frogs and turtles, and all attendees will have an opportunity for hands-on interaction. Instructor is Ollie Mendenhall. All ages are welcome.

“Bread & Butter” will be held Thursday, June 30, 10 to 11:30 a.m.

Warm up your ovens because kids will be making Bread in Bag! They will learn about the process to create bread dough, proofing, yeast, and kneading dough. Each student will be bringing home one loaf of white bread to bake at home that day. And what is bread without a little butter? The students will also be making butter to spread on their fresh, warm bread. Instructor is Erin Orwig. This is for those ages 8 and up.

“Watercolor & Salt Art” will be held Wednesday, July 6, 2 to 3:15 p.m.

Take your watercolor painting skills to the next level in this class. We’ll experiment with watercolors and how they react to different kinds of salt. It’s art and science – both in one class!

Instructor is Kim Dunnigan. This is for those ages 9 to 13.

“Lincoln: Behind the Beard” will be held Tuesday, July 12 for first to third grades, 10 to 11:30 a.m. and for fourth to sixth grades, 1 to 2:30 p.m.

This interactive class will touch on many aspects of Abraham Lincoln's life. From his boyhood to the White House, from his boys, to his hobbies, and to the impact he continues to make on us today. Come and have fun learning about our 16th President. Instructor is Rick Klinedinst. This is for those entering grades first to sixth. Location is the Conference Room at MidAmerica National Bank. “Money, Money” will be held Thursday, July 14 for first to third graders from 10 to 11:30 a.m. and for fourth to sixth grades from 1 to 2:30 p.m.

Have you ever wondered where money came from, the banking industry, and good money habits?

Instructors will use the 4 Jar system to simplify the budgeting process: Saving, Spending, Investing, and Giving. The session will include fun activities to show students how to make money and how to distinguish between needs and wants. There will be a team competition with prizes at the end! Instructors are Jim Gillam and Ryan Spangler. It is for those entering grades first to sixth. Location is the Conference Room at MidAmerica National Bank.

“Watercolor & Crayon Art” will be held Tuesday, July 19, 2 to 3:15 p.m.

This is a different look at watercolor painting by coloring with a white oil pastel crayon and then painting over it. It’s art and science – both in one class! Instructor is Kim Dunnigan. It is for those ages 9 to 13.

“Safe@Home” will be held Thursday, July 21, 2 to 3:30 p.m.

Safe@Home is designed to prepare students for their first step toward independence so they can be safe when they are home alone. They’ll learn how to practice safe habits, prevent unsafe situations, and what to do when faced with dangers such as power failures or weather emergencies. A take-home workbook is included in the class fee. Instructor is Andrea Barbknecht. The fee is $30 and is for those ages 10 and up.
