The developer behind A Summer's End - Hong Kong 1986 has announced their next game.

Released in 2020, Oracle and Bone's previous visual novel was a lesbian story centring on the relationship between two Chinese women living in Hong Kong named Sam and Michelle. It was among Digital Spy's favourite games that year.

In the Ocean I Learned to Float is their next project.

It's again set in Hong Kong, but this time in the year 1988 and follows a character named Kay, as she investigates the truth behind her best friend's disappearance.

The synopsis reads: "Kay's return to Hong Kong was supposed to be her homecoming, but upon visiting her childhood home she makes a shocking discovery.

"Her best friend, Grace, is missing. In her pursuit for truth, Kay meets a disco dancer and businesswoman. By piecing together their stories and their fragmented memories, she begins to uncover the terrifying secret behind Grace's disappearance.

"Weaving personal history with the historical past, In the Ocean I Learned to Float is a romance story about resilience and hope in the face of uncertainty."

Elaborating further on their website, Oracle and Bone confirmed that the game will be longer than their previous release and include "elements of investigation and exploration".

"The colonial history of Hong Kong and the intersectionality of race, class, gender, and sexuality is an integral theme to understanding the new cast's motivations and worldview," they added, briefly discussing some of the themes that will be present in the narrative.

Familiar characters from A Summer's End will also return, although the developer have not confirmed which ones and in what capacity.

In an interview with Digital Spy back in 2020, creators Charissa So and Tida Kietsungden revealed that they had plans to revisit A Summer's End protagonists Michelle and Sam.

"We would definitely like to expand on Michelle and Sam's story," they said at the time. "We do have something we're working on, but it may not necessarily be a direct sequel. It'll be touched upon in the next story."

There is no timeframe on a release, but Oracle and Bone said that progress has been "steady" and further information will be shared later this year.
