Summertime can mean bored or hungry kids. Here are some places in Tacoma to fix that

The city of Tacoma will have a number of programs to keep children and teenagers busy and their bellies full this summer.

Tacoma middle and high school students can participate in Summer Late Nights program hosted by Metro Parks Tacoma in collaboration with Tacoma Public Schools, YMCA-Pierce & Kitsap Counties, Greentrike and Boys & Girls Clubs of South Puget Sound.

The program will provide teens with safe spaces around Tacoma to get dinner, participate in activities and hang out with friends, according to Metro Parks Tacoma. Safe spaces will include several middle schools, high schools, community centers and nonprofits.

Students can drop in to the site closest to their homes or to the location they are assigned beginning June 26. The program will be held Monday through Friday from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.

For a full list of locations and to register students, visit the Metro Parks Tacoma website.

Metro Parks also is sponsoring a Summer Playground and Lunch Program. The program provides people under 18 with free lunches, activities and games.

The program will be held Monday through Friday starting July 3. The program will not be held on July 4.

Games and activities will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and lunch will be served from noon to 1 p.m.

The program will be at 10 parks around Tacoma, including Wright Park, Franklin Park and South Park. For a full list of locations, visit the Metro Parks Tacoma website.

Tacoma Public Schools will also provide free meals to students enrolled in summer programs, and Trinity Lutheran Church Food Pantry will provide food over the summer, according to Tacoma Public Schools.

Trinity Lutheran Church Food Pantry will provide food every Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Friday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 2 p.m. beginning in July.
