Summit County's COVID cases up 20.2%; Ohio cases surge 23.4%

New coronavirus cases leaped in Ohio in the week ending Sunday, rising 23.4% as 3,828 cases were reported. The previous week had 3,103 new cases of the virus that causes COVID-19.

Ohio ranked 31st among the states where coronavirus was spreading the fastest on a per-person basis, a USA TODAY Network analysis of Johns Hopkins University data shows.

In the latest week, coronavirus cases in the United States increased 20.8% from the week before, with 238,885 cases reported. With 3.51% of the country's population, Ohio had 1.6% of the country's cases in the last week. Across the country, 34 states had more cases in the latest week than they did in the week before.

Summit County reported 131 cases and five deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 109 cases and zero deaths. Throughout the pandemic, it has reported 112,216 cases and 1,701 deaths.

Portage County reported 44 cases and one death in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 38 cases and zero deaths. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 34,138 cases and 445 deaths.

Stark County reported 46 cases and six deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 62 cases and zero deaths. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 79,756 cases and 1,702 deaths.

Medina County reported 21 cases and one death in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 29 cases and zero deaths. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 40,005 cases and 505 deaths.

Wayne County reported 26 cases and zero deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported seven cases and zero deaths. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 23,112 cases and 435 deaths.

Within Ohio, the worst weekly outbreaks on a per-person basis were in Lucas County with 103 cases per 100,000 per week; Butler County with 91; and Adams County with 65. The Centers for Disease Control says high levels of community transmission begin at 100 cases per 100,000 per week.

Adding the most new cases overall were Franklin County, with 579 cases; Cuyahoga County, with 563 cases; and Lucas County, with 441. Weekly case counts rose in 41 counties from the previous week. The worst increases from the prior week's pace were in Lucas, Cuyahoga and Hamilton counties.

Ohio ranked 43rd among states for share of people receiving at least one shot, with 63.3% of its residents at least partially vaccinated. The national rate is 77.2%, a USA TODAY analysis of CDC data shows. The Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, which are the most used in the United States, require two doses administered a few weeks apart.

In the week ending Sunday, Ohio reported administering another 105,144 vaccine doses, including 8,534 first doses. In the previous week, the state administered 58,814 vaccine doses, including 7,853 first doses. In all, Ohio reported it has administered 17,558,372 total doses.

Across Ohio, cases fell in 41 counties, with the best declines in Butler County, with 348 cases from 452 a week earlier; in Stark County, with 46 cases from 62; and in Perry County, with 4 cases from 15.

In Ohio, 124 people were reported dead of COVID-19 in the week ending Sunday. In the week before that, zero people were reported dead.

A total of 2,676,629 people in Ohio have tested positive for the coronavirus since the pandemic began, and 38,166 people have died from the disease, Johns Hopkins University data shows. In the United States 80,396,250 people have tested positive and 985,504 people have died.

USA TODAY analyzed federal hospital data as of Sunday, April 10.

Hospitals in 19 states reported more COVID-19 patients than a week earlier, while hospitals in 16 states had more COVID-19 patients in intensive-care beds. Hospitals in 26 states admitted more COVID-19 patients in the latest week than a week prior, the USA TODAY analysis of U.S. Health and Human Services data shows.
