Sumrall steals Game 1: Takeaways from Day 1 of the MHSAA baseball championships

PEARL — The Mississippi High School Activities Association baseball championships started Tuesday at Trustmark Park

Here are three takeaways from the first day of championship play.

J.T Schnoor shines in Game 1 victory over Biggersville

Schnoor — a Pearl River Central signee — entered the Game 1 of the Class 1A championship with a 6-1 record in 14 appearances. The senior had a 1.58 ERA and 98 strikeouts in 53 and 1/3 innings.

Schnoor continued his dominance at Trustmark Field Tuesday. Schnoor had a complete game, allowed five hits with five strikeouts in Resurrection Catholic's 3-1 victory over Biggersville (25-6).

The biggest moment of the game came in the sixth inning after the Eagles (32-5) took a 3-1 lead behind a two-RBI single from senior Joe Scarborough. Schnoor had the bases loaded with two outs and junior Hunter Johnson at the plate.

Johnson, a .382 hitter with 25 RBIs this season, struck out as Schnoor escaped without giving up a run.

Game 2 of the series is scheduled for 1 p.m. Thursday.

Rain, rain, go away

It didn't take long before a weather delay left its mark on this year's baseball championships. The opening game of the Class 4A championship was delayed for an hour and 15 minutes.

The MHSAA softball championships were delayed on Saturday for more than four hours in two weather delays during Game 3 of the Class 4A state championship.

Weather caused delays Tuesday, but expected rain canceled three games on Wednesday. The MHSAA postponed the Class 2A, 3A and 6A games until Friday. Each classification will open the series on Friday and continue with Game 2 Saturday.

Sumrall survives with late rally

Sumrall — Baseball America's No. 2 ranked team nationally — trailed Pontotoc 5-1 headed into the bottom of the seven. That's when the Bobcats (34-1) came alive offensively in Game 1 of the Class 4A championship.

Sumrall scored four runs in the seventh, including back-to-back walks with the bases loaded to force extra innings. That's when senior Ethan Aultman secured the Game 1 victory. Aultman led the Bobcats with a .443 batting average this season and singled down the third base line for a walk-off victory.
