It’s already been a remarkable season for Grant Fisher.

The former Stanford standout now with the Portland-based Bowerman Track Club broke Galen Rupp’s American 10,000-meter record in March, just weeks after breaking Rupp’s indoor 5,000 record.

He also finished second in the USATF 10,000 championship behind Joe Klecker and won the 5,000 title to qualify for both races at the World Athletics Championships.

At 1 p.m. Sunday, he’ll attempt to become the first American to win a global medal in the 10,000 since Rupp won Olympic silver in London in 2012.

Fisher came close in Tokyo when he placed fifth.

The front end of the race should be a predicable battle between Olympic champion Selemon Barega of Ethiopia and world record holder and defending world champion Joshua Cheptegei of Uganda, which also has medal contender Jacob Kiplimo in the race. Kiplimo won bronze in Tokyo.

Fisher’s training partner Moh Ahmed of Canada is also entered. He was sixth in the Olympics and went on to win silver in the 5,000.
