Sunday morning could be the coldest of the year, with temperatures dropping into the 20s

A flurry of weather warnings is in effect along Florida’s west coast as freezing temperatures impact marine and beach conditions near shores, and fire conditions inland. Sunday could be the coldest we’ve seen so far this season, the National Weather Service in Tampa said.

Freeze warnings stand Saturday throughout the Nature Coast, Manatee County, Sarasota County and Fort Myers. Despite clear skies and sunshine, the forecast shows the mid-50s for the Nature Coast, low 50s for Orlando and Tampa Bay area, and upper 50s close to freezing for Fort Myers.

Temperatures are expected to drop to the 20s overnight into Sunday morning. The freeze could impact plants, crops, and outdoor plumbing. If not covered outdoor water pipes could burst, NWS said.

You should dress in layers including a coat, a hat, and gloves to protect yourself from the cold, NWS said. Wind chill warnings are in effect until Sunday as cold air in the low 20s to mid-30s blows across the area.

Hazardous winds on the coast are under a gale warning, small craft advisory, high surf advisory and high rip advisory current risk for Mariners and Beachgoers in cities along the gulf.

Swimmers and surfers are advised to stay off the water because dangerous swim conditions high rip currents could sweep experienced swimmers away from the shore and into deep waters. “If caught in a rip current relax and float. Don`t swim against the current. If able, swim in a direction following the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help,” NWS said.

Gale force winds speeds of 28 to 49 mph in the water could cause small boast to capsize and impact visibility for those driving them. Saturday night, high surf currents are expected on beach shores. Mariners should stay in port, seek safe harbors, and secure their vessels, NWS said.

NWS said a combination of dry air, strong winds, and low humidity could cause an increased chance of fire risks from Sunday to Monday. Fire conditions are being monitored closely.
