Sunday roundup: Hoover, Green boys win at Spectrum Orthopaedics Classic, Aquinas also wins

BOYS BASKETBALL

HOOVER 55, STRONGSVILLE 48 Tanner Ware scored 22 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead Hoover at the Spectrum Orthopaedics Classic, which the Vikings host.

Ware hit 7 of 9 free throws for the Vikings, who built a 31-26 halftime lead and held off the Mustangs in the second half. The Vikings hit 16 of 18 free throws.

Elijah Barker finished with 15 points, nine rebounds and three assists for Hoover.

GREEN 74, CLEVELAND BENEDICTINE 50 The Bulldogs won Sunday’s first game at the Spectrum Orthopaedics Classic. No other details were available.

ST. THOMAS AQUINAS 71, WARREN JFK 70 Julius Kimbrough hit four 3s and scored 22 points to lead Aquinas. The Eagles outscored the Knights 43-30 in the second half, but Aquinas was able to close out the win.

Deshaun Leishman finished with 13 points for the Knights (7-4).

HIGH SCHOOL BOWLING

CENTRAL GIRLS WIN STATE CHALLENGE The Central Catholic girls won the team championship Saturday at the inaugural Ohio Private School State Challenge at Wayne Webb’s Columbus Bowl.

Central led qualifying with a 2,497 total pinfall, 124 pins ahead of Hoban. The Crusaders advanced through two elimination rounds to face Mt. Notre Dame of Cincinnati in the championship round.

After falling behind by six pins after the first Baker System game, the Crusaders came back to defeat Mt. Notre Dame 288-274.

Central’s Alina Stebbins and Alex Vargo earned all-tournament honors. Stebbins and Vargo finished second and third with a two-game series of 382 and 369, respectively.

MINERVA BOYS RALLY AT DOVER The Minerva boys won the team title at Saturday’s Dover Invitational.

The Lions finished second to make the cut, then beat Garaway and East Liverpool in Baker matches to win the title. They came from a game down against East Liverpool.

Minerva’s Ahdyn Lautzenheiser finished first overall. He also picked up the second 7-10 split in team history.
