Sunday's college roundup: Bowdoin men's soccer advances to third round of NCAA Div. III tournament
Nov. 13—The Brunswick men's soccer team advance to the third round of the NCAA Division III tournament, beating Vassar in the penalty kick shootout on Sunday at Pickard Field in Brunswick.
The game ended in a 1-1 tie and Bowdoin, who improves to 13-1-5, won the shootout, 4-1. The Polar Bears will face SUNY Oneonta in the third round.
Bowdoin took a 1-0 lead in the first half on a goal by Carlton Steinberg. Vassar (9-4-6) tied it in the second half Duncan Keker scored on a penalty kick.
Dylan Reid, Harry Cooper, Ronaldo Cabral and Tyler Huck scored in the shootout for Bowdoin.
MEN'S BASKETBALL
HAVERFORD 80, BOWDOIN 69: The Fords (1-1) closed the first half on a 10-7 run on their way to a win over the Polar Bears (0-2) in the Garnet Tip-off Classic at Swarthmore, Pennsylvania.
Nate Torres led Haverford with 18 points and Nick Kerkorian chipped in with 16.
Michael Simonds had 25 points for Bowdoin, while James McGowan had 20.
SOUTHERN MAINE CC 85, WORD OF LIFE 50: DeSean Cromwell has 12 points and 12 rebounds, and Thomas Martinotti added 12 points as the Seawolves (5-1) beat the Huskies (0-4) in South Portland.
Jack Pyzynski added 11 points for SMCC, while Luke Gabloff had 10.
Luke Augusta led Word of Life with 19 points.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
TCNJ 63, UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND 51: Julia Setaro had 19 points as the Lions (1-1) beat the Nor'easters (1-1) in Biddeford.
Nina Branchizio and Izzy Leazier each added 13 points for The College of New Jersey.
Jordyn Franzen and Cameron Watkins had 10 points each for UNE.
BOWDOIN 77, UMASS-DARTMOUTH 61: Sydney Jones had 16 points and seven rebounds as the Polar Bears (2-0) beat the Corsairs (2-1) in Dartmouth, Massachusetts.
Annie Boasberg added 13 points and nine rebounds for Bowdoin, while Megan Tan had 12 points and Tori Beck 10.
Jordan Moretti had 15 points, while Kaylin Zalewski had 14 and Caroline Wilson 13 for UMass-Dartmouth.
FOOTBALL
TOP 25: No. 1 Georgia led an unchanged top five in The Associated Press poll, while the rest of the Top 25 was shuffled after eight ranked teams lost — including two big upsets in the Pac-12.
For the second straight week, the Bulldogs received all but one of the 63 first-place votes in the AP Top 25. No. 2 Ohio State received the other first-place vote.
No. 3 Michigan, No. 4 TCU and No. 5 Tennessee held their spots after victories Saturday, with only the Horned Frogs facing a real challenge.
Georgia, Ohio State, Michigan and Tennessee won by a combined 203-60 against conference opponents.
Home losses by Oregon (to Washington) and UCLA (to Arizona) shook up the rest of the top 10. No. 6 LSU and No. 7 Southern California each moved up a spot.
