Sunday's roundup: Leominster, Shrewsbury earn wins in American Legion Zone 4 playoffs

American Legion

Leominster 1, East Side 0: Nick Garcia drove in Sean Dutton with a two-out double in the first inning as visiting Leominster blanked top-seeded East Side at Gaskill Field in the first round of double-elimination play in the Zone 4 playoffs.

Evan McCarthy earned the win, allowing three hits and striking out nine on 108 pitches.

Leominster was slated to face Shrewsbury in the winners' bracket final Monday at Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field.

Shrewsbury 6, Milford 5: James Railsback went 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run as Shrewsbury edged Milford in a Zone 4 playoffs first-round matchup at Tivnan Field.

Teammate Andrew Gardner drove in two runs, while A.J. Hamm had two hits. Dante Pavone belted a two-run homer for Milford.

Milford was to play East Side in an elimination game Monday at Gaskill Field.

Senior Ruth

Stamford (Conn.) 13, Paul N. Johnson 3: Seth Larson went 2 for 2 with a run, while D.J. Prampin had a hit, a run and RBI as the PNJ All-Stars fell to the host Thunder at the Senior Ruth New England Regionals. Teammates Colin Bradford and Grady Freeman each had a hit and an RBI, and Mike Mero collected one hit and one run.

Paul N. Johnson 11, Cape Cod 6: Seth Larson was 3 for 4 with three RBIs and Mike Mero added two hits and D.J. Prampin drove in a pair as the PNJ All-Stars rallied in the nightcap to earn a trip to the final.

Griffin Berard earned the win, striking out seven over six innings.

Monday's scheduled final was rained out, so PNJ faces Stamford at 5 p.m. Tuesday, needing to win two games to earn the title.

International League

Norfolk 1, WooSox 0: Jacob Nottingham drove in Yusniel Diaz with a single in the bottom of the sixth as the Tides (44-46) edged the visiting WooSox (47-43) to split the six-game series.

Johan Mieses and Grant Williams each smacked two hits for Worcester. Norfolk starting pitcher and Orioles' 2017 first round pick DL Hall struck out 10 in five innings.

Futures Collegiate League

Worcester 9, Westfield 2: Sebastian Mexico went 4 for 5 with with two RBIs and a run as the Bravehearts (19-26) collected 17 hits to earn a weekend split with the visiting Starfires.

Worcester's Jake Marquez was 3 for 5 with two runs, while Cam Seymour (HR, 3 RBIs) and Andrew Chronister each had two hits. Clay Robbins picked up the win, allowing two hits and two runs while striking out six.

Coleman Picard closed out the game by striking out three and holding Westfield hitless over the final two innings.
