Sunflowers, movie nights and more: Here are 5 things to do near Peoria this weekend

August is full of fun activities. Here are five events you might want to check out in the Peoria area.

Sonic movie night

Enjoy a showing of "Sonic the Hedgehog" with family and friends on Friday, Aug. 19, at Junction City Shopping Center. The event will begin at 6 p.m., and the movie will begin between 7:30 and 8 p.m. Sonic the Hedgehog will be available for a meet and greet with photo opportunities from 6 to 8 p.m. Admission is $5 per person or $20 for a group of 4 or more people. Bring your own lawn chairs and blankets. Popcorn, lemon shake-ups and shaved ice will be available for purchase.

Laser light shows at the museum

Laser Light Nights are back at the Dome at the Peoria Riverfront Museum, featuring an all-new system. Three different shows will be featured Friday, Aug. 19. "Laser Beatles — Sgt. Pepper" will be shown at 6 p.m., "Laser Lady Gaga" will be shown at 7:15 p.m., and "Laser Hendrix" will be shown at 8:30 p.m. Admission to each show is $7 for museum members and $10 for the general public.

Sunflower Experience

The 2022 Sunflower Experience will open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 20, at Tanner's Orchard, 740 Illinois Route 40, Speer. The event will continue each day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. through Aug. 27. You will have the opportunity to enjoy food, photo opportunities and all the sunshine and happiness that sunflowers bring. Admission is $8 at the door and you can pick and purchase sunflowers at $5 per stem or $30 for a bucket.

Richard Pryor film festival

The George Washington Carver Community Center will celebrate the legacy of Peoria's own Richard Pryor with a showing of two of his most famous films on Saturday, Aug. 20, at the Peoria Riverfront Museum. "Jo Jo Dancer, Your Life is Calling" will be shown at 4 p.m. and "Richard Pryor: Live on the Sunset Strip" will be shown at 8 p.m. Tickets can be purchased online at www.peoriariverfrontmuseum.org, by calling 309-686-7000 or in person at the museum's front desk.

Pekin downtown concert series

Pekin's Downtown Street Party Series will continue Saturday, Aug. 20, in the 300 block of Court Street in Pekin. The block party starts at 5 p.m., with food and merchandise vendors. Revel in Red begin playing at 7 p.m. Admission is free.
