Which sunscreen SPF offers the best protection from the Texas sun? Here’s what to know

Sunscreen is often a popular summer product, typically sold more prominently in grocery stores during the warmer months, but its use goes beyond preventing sunburns.

A 2022 survey by the American Academy of Dermatology found that sun protection grew in importance among Americans within the last several years.

While 82% of the thousand respondents said sun protection was important, most misunderstood how to protect themselves properly.

Although sunscreen is often a front-of-store product in the summer, dermatologists recommend applying it year round to prevent skin cancer and even wrinkles.

Here’s what to know about sunscreen use for summertime in Texas.

What type of sunscreen is best in Texas?

Whether you’re using a lotion or spray, dermatologists recommend using a sunscreen with a SPF of at least 30, which blocks 97% of the sun’s UVB rays, according to the AAD.

Different types of sunscreen options include lotions, creams, gels, ointments, wax sticks, and sprays. The AAD has the following guideline for the best use of each type:

  • Creams: Best for dry skin and applying on the face

  • Gels: Best for oily complexions and hairy areas, such as the scalp or male chest

  • Sticks: Good to use around the eyes

  • Sprays: Most preferred by parents with small children. The AAD recommends spraying until skin glistens and rub it in. Spray sunscreen into your hands to apply to face.

Which sunscreen is most protective against sunburn and wrinkles?

There are two types of rays to consider: UVB and UVA.

UVB rays are what cause sunburn and UVA rays are linked to premature winkling, according to the Skin Cancer Foundation.

Broad spectrum coverage SPF protects from both UVB and UVA rays.

Sunscreens that pass the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s broad spectrum test procedure — which measures a sunscreen’s protection against UVB and UVA rays — may be labeled as “Broad Spectrum SPF” on the product’s front label, according to the FDA.

What SPF is best for Texas?

A SPF of 30 or higher is recommended for extended outdoor activities or if you work primarily outdoors.

Sunscreens with a SPF of 15 can be used for every day, occasional exposure like driving or walking your dog, according to the Skin Cancer Foundation.

Water resistant and very water resistant sunscreens are ideal for swimming or intense exercise.

Sunscreens labeled water resistant are tested to be effective for up to 40 minutes of swimming and very water resistant sunscreens stay effective for up to 80 minutes in the water, according to the Skin Cancer Foundation.

How often should sunscreen be applied?

Sunscreen should be applied every day, year round — not just during the summer months.

The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends reapplying every two hours and immediately after swimming or excessive sweating.

Is sunscreen in makeup and moisturizers enough?

Makeup with SPF, no matter how high the SPF, is not enough to give adequate sun protection, according to John Hopkins Medicine.

While moisturizers with SPF offer some sun protection, health experts with San Diego-based Sharp HealthCare report “all-in-one products” may not provide as much protection as pure sunscreen.

Sharp Healthcare recommends applying sunscreen last, after moisturizer and makeup, so it can act as the “gate around the property” to protect your face.
