Hello, neighbors! Diane Witek here with a brand-new copy of the Sunset Park Daily.

First, today's weather:

A couple of afternoon showers. High: 58, low: 51.

Here are the top stories today in Sunset Park:

  1. For their efforts in helping end the citywide manhunt for the Sunset Park subway shooter, Mayor Eric Adams and Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell honored five transit workers last week for their response. (CBS New York)

  2. Due to our online spending habits, the exhaust from the warehouses and delivery trucks that we love to see delivering to our home are a threat to public health that disproportionately impacts low-income neighborhoods where the warehouses reside. Monday, Assembly Member Marcela Mitaynes (D-Brooklyn), who represents Sunset Park, introduced a bill to cut down on pollution from truck exhaust associated with local delivery from online retailers, like Amazon, and control the proliferation of warehouses. (THE CITY)

  3. Positive COVID-19 rates have risen throughout the city, and Brooklyn's Park Slope 11217 has reached the highest in Brooklyn. Seven-day rates stood at 9.45 percent, nearly twice the city-wide rate of 4.8 percent. Though nowhere near the levels of the winter outbreak due to the omicron variant, this latest surge could lead to new restrictions. (Patch)

  4. The MTA continues its mask mandate after a federal judge in Florida on Monday struck down the Center for Disease Control and Prevention's nationwide face-covering requirement on airplanes and public transit. The transit authority intends to keep its mandate in place on its buses, subways, and commuter railroads. The Port Authority also announced that masks are still required at its New York facilities.
