šŸŒ± Sunset Park Daily: Latinos' Health + Gov's Island 'Dog Days'

Happy Friday, neighbors! Diane Witek here with everything you need to know about what's happening today in Sunset Park.

First, today's weather:

Some sun, then clouds. High: 23, low: 12.

Here are the top stories today in Sunset Park:

  1. Exercise is a must for better health; if you are not comfortable going to the gym during the pandemic, then perhaps try exercising outdoors. For exercise to be effective, it ā€œhas to include something (that leaves you) a little bit out of breath and makes you sweat a little bit, 15 minutes a day,ā€ added Dr. Isaac Dapkins, chief medical officer of the NYU Langone Health Family Health Center in heavily Latino Sunset Park, Brooklyn. The recommendations for physical activity are 150 minutes per week of moderate aerobic activity, according to the Mayo Clinic. (mlive.com)

  2. Walk your pup and get fantastic views of New York's harbor during "Dog Days!" Governors Island, for the first time ever, is allowing visitors to bring their dogs onto the Island for Saturday "Dog Days." Starting Jan. 22, from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. visitors and their leashed dogs will be able to explore the Island's 172 acres. In addition, the Trust will open a first-of-its-kind, centrally located off-leash Island dog park every Saturday to coincide with Dog Days. (Broadway World)

  3. On Jan. 19, at around 2:30 p.m., a fire raced through the fourth floor of a vacant building located at 50th Street and First Avenue in Brooklyn. FDNY personnel responded to a call; upon their arrival, officers found heavy smoke pushing from the fourth-floor windows of the seven-story unoccupied building. By late afternoon, the fire was brought under control. (AMNY)
