🌱 Sunset Park Daily: Rental Prices + Free Cervical Screening

Happy Tuesday, people of Sunset Park! Diane Witek here with everything going on in Sunset Park today.

First, today's weather:

Increasing amounts of sun. High: 42, low: 19.

Here are the top stories in Sunset Park today:

  1. New York City renters are staying put as a record-breaking 50 percent drop in New York City rental units capped an already challenging year for tenants, according to new study. Supply and demand dictates pricing which explains skyrocketing rental prices. “The market is in the process of normalizing after nearly two years of uncertainty," explained StreetEasy economist Nancy Wu. "Concessions that landlords gave at the beginning of last year will expire, leaving many renters with no choice but to move out of their COVID-19 era discounted rentals," Wu said in a statement.

  2. There are many new laws going into effect this year, they include salary range, which now must be posted in job openings starting April 2022; delivery worker protection, those cyclists who deliver your food order will receive minimum wage; accessibility to restaurant bathroom; and a ban on charging workers fees to access their tips. The best ban for the Earth is the styrofoam ban, single-use foam food containers and packing peanuts. Starting Jan. 1, 2022, those materials are all banned. Employer monitoring sounds creepy, employers will now have to alert employees if their internet, email and phone usage is being monitored. Whistleblower protection will help protect whistleblowers more thoroughly. Recreational marijuana for adults was legalized in New York in 2021, the sale of the substance is still not allowed. Lastly, changes to solitary confinement. It limits the amount of solitary confinement for an incarcerated person to 15 days. (Patch)

  3. Family Health Centers at NYU Langone in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, enables physicians to detect and remove precancerous cells from the surface or canal of the cervix during the patient's same appointment. It's free! So, get your cervical cancer screening and preventive treatment today! (News-Medical.Net)

From our sponsor:

Last week, we told you about our new favorite non-alcoholic go-to — the refreshingly bitter drinks from our partners at Betera. They’re chef-created from natural botanicals, lightly effervescent and worthy of life beyond “Dry January.” We mentioned that their Ginger-Orange was excellent; we’ve since tried Elderflower-Lime and loved it as well — light and floral with the perfect amount of zing. We're converts.

Enough of you took Betera up on their 15 percent discount on first orders for Patch Daily readers that they’ve extended the offer for another week. Use PATCH15 at checkout. Highly recommended — try Betera here.
