🌱 Sunset Park Daily: Subway Platform Barriers + Extra SNAP Cash
Good day, neighbors! It's me again, Diane Witek, your host of the Sunset Park Daily.
First, today's weather:
Windy with morning snow, 1-3 inches. High: 36. low: 13.
Here are the top stories today in Sunset Park:
Just days after Michelle Alyssa Go, a 40-year-old woman of Asian descent was pushed to her death in front of a train pulling into a Times Square station, the MTA says it is once again looking into possibly adding platform barriers to subway stations across the city. "The platform doors are an idea that works in many places, but there's some special complexities in New York because of the age of our system, because of the location of structure, because it does interfere with ADA accessibility, because of the way that the subway system ventilates," MTA chair and CEO Janno Lieber said. New York City residents who receive SNAP benefits will receive extra funding. The state will provide an additional $230 million in federal funding to SNAP recipients, Gov. Kathy Hochul announced last week. "Every person enrolled in SNAP will get the maximum benefit level this month. That adds up to $835 for a family of four. Those who already receive the maximum will get a $95 stipend." (CBSNewYork)
N95s are coming your way! We are all requesting free at-home COVID tests, so it makes sense that N95s would come next. The Biden administration plans to give out 400 million free N95 masks in the coming weeks. The free masks will be made available to the public at thousands of local pharmacies and community health centers nationwide starting late next week, according to a White House official, and will mark "the largest deployment of personal protective equipment in U.S. history."(CBSNewYork)
