Super Bowl 2023 ads didn't disappoint. Here are some of the highlights

Commercials are part of the Super Bowl tradition; they help make the game one of the most popular TV events of the year. And this year, as usual, they didn’t disappoint.

Super Bowl commercials on Sunday night had everyone laughing, crying and thinking with movie stars leading big brand spots while other ads focused on narratives.

Here are some of the many ads aired during the game:

The Farmer’s Dog

The Farmer’s Dog, which sells fresh food for dogs as an alternative to mass-produced dog food, was perhaps the big winner of the night.

The commercial tugs at the heartstrings of anyone who's ever had a pet. The ad depicts moments in the lives of a woman and her dog, starting when she's a young girl who names her black Lab puppy Bear. It shows their adventures, such as taking walks and going to the beach, as they grow up alongside each other.

Then it shows her going off to college and leaving Bear behind. But soon she's an adult in her own place, married with a baby, and an older Bear is still by her side.

T-Mobile and Travolta

This year, T-Mobile went the nostalgic route to promote its home internet product.

"Scrubs" stars Zach Braff and Donald Faison teach John Travolta about the service by singing to the tune of “Tell Me More,” the hit song from the classic musical “Grease.”

Jeff Ross roasts Mr. Peanut

In 2020, Planters killed off Mr. Peanut, the company’s mascot, in its Super Bowl ad.

But on Sunday night, Planters brought him back as Jeff Ross, Natasha Leggero and other famous comedians appeared to "roast" the fan favorite in an ad celebrating the brand's line of dry roasted nuts.

Pepsi

To promote its new zero sugar drink, Pepsi had actors Ben Stiller and Steve Martin star in two different commercials where they tested their acting skills in different scenarios.

But what about their enthusiastic reactions to Pepsi's newest drink? Were they real? Or were they just acting? "The only way to know is to try it yourself," they say.

Dunkin’ Donuts

Dunkin’ Donuts, one of the most popular coffee and doughnut shops in New England, invited actor (and Cambridge, Massachusetts native) Ben Affleck to take orders from unsuspecting customers at a drive-thru in Medford, Massachusetts.

Between those who recognize the movie star and those who had no idea who they were talking to, Affleck and customers joke and laugh as they come face-to-face at the window. And be sure to watch until the end, when J. Lo makes a guest appearance.

Tubi

The ad-supported streaming service Tubi, which offers free movies and TV shows, aired its take on the “rabbit hole” expression.

In the ad, regular people are going about their day when human-sized rabbits capture them and throw them into massive holes in the ground. As they fall, screens around them show all the movies and TV shows available on the platform.

Movie trailers

As is the case every year, movie studios do not miss the chance to capitalize on the Super Bowl’s large audience to promote their upcoming films.

This year viewers saw trailer for Warner Bros.’ “The Flash,” (featuring Michael Keaton's return as Batman), as well Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy 3;” Disney’s “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny;” Paramount’s “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts;” and more.
