(NEXSTAR) – Fans are set to converge on Las Vegas, host of the 2024 Super Bowl and a city legendary for gambling – but visitors may be disappointed if they try to place money on non-game related wagers known as prop bets.

In the U.S. betting laws vary from state to state, but the general rule is that wagering is limited to what happens on the field. A handful of states allow bets to be placed on the color of Gatorade dumped on the winning coach — red or pink is this year’s plus-260 favorite at FanDuel Sportsbook — but even that type of wager is not allowed in Las Vegas.

Las Vegas, the longtime epicenter of sports betting in the U.S., has some of the strictest rules regarding the kinds of wagers made.

“We don’t want any subjectivity in a prop (bet),” BetMGM public relations manager John Ewing said. “We want it to be either it won or it didn’t win or went over or went under, and that’s the concern for regulators as well. That’s why typically we stick to if it’s in the box score, it can be posted.”

Taylor Swift

Some of the more exotic Super Bowl bets that have little to do with the actual play of the game – see all things Taylor Swift – will have to be made offshore with sportsbooks such as BetUS, which is based in Costa Rica, or FanDuel Sportsbook Canada.

As of this writing, the odds of Travis Kelce proposing to Taylor Swift were +1060, according to Canada-based Covers.com, but whether or not she’ll even make it to Super Bowl LVIII isn’t known as the “Cruel Summer” singer is performing in Japan that weekend.

Other side bets on Taylor Swift include whether or not she’ll be shown during the national anthem (Yes: -120), and how many times (over 1.5: -110).

Halftime

The glitzy, highly-anticipated performance has traditionally been a major draw when it comes to prop bets.

With Usher performing this year, one of the bets is which song he will perform first (“Yea!” is the current favorite at +200, along with the total number of songs played during the break (Over 8.5 songs: -125).

When it comes to a potential special guest performer, Alicia Keys is the favorite to join Usher on stage (-330), followed by Ludacris (-250), Lil Jon (-105), will.i.am (+220) and Nicki Minaj (+280).

Caesars Sportsbook assistant trading director Adam Pullen’s position is the more bets, the merrier.

“We’ve come a long way, but some stuff like we’re talking about here (about Swift) or betting on elections, there still might be a few years before we get to that point,” Pullen said. “But I like anything that drives action and gets people to bet. But we’re dependent on what the regulators in each particular state has to say.”
