Super Bowl clean-up worker killed in ATV accident

A man killed while working clean-up at the Super Bowl was identified Tuesday by authorities.

Shawn Eugene Lee, 44, was helping tear down a tent outside State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Ariz., on Saturday when he was killed, NBC News reported.

Police said Lee was wearing a safety vest that was strapped to a nearby ATV, according to local CBS affiliate KPHO. It remains unclear why Lee was attached to the vehicle.

While Lee was working about 20 feet above the ground, another person got onto the ATV and drove away, NBC News reported. Lee was yanked to the ground and dragged behind the vehicle.

The Maricopa County coroner determined that Lee died from “blunt force injuries,” according to NBC News. His death was labeled an industrial accident.

The man who drove off on the ATV is cooperating with police and is not expected to face charges, local NBC affiliate KPNX reported. He was not impaired at the time.

Police are still conducting a full investigation into the incident.

Lee was a resident of Rossville, Ga., a southern suburb of Chattanooga, Tenn. He worked for Chattanooga Tent, a temporary structure company, his family told Chattanooga ABC affiliate WTVC.

Lee had flown to Arizona with the company specifically for set-up and takedown operations surrounding the Feb. 12 Super Bowl, according to WTVC.

Though Lee was a veteran employee, Super Bowl LVII was his first time working at the big game.

“Shawn was very kindhearted, loved, and respected everyone. He was a huge Georgia Bulldogs baseball and football fan. Loved to fish and be outdoors,” his niece told WTVC. “My Uncle Shawn was proud of his family, he loved us very much and made sure we knew every opportunity he had.”
