Super Bowl LV: Explore Chiefs and Buccaneers trophy case in augmented reality

Super Bowl LV features a lot of intriguing storylines: Tom Brady’s quest for a seventh ring, Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid’s potential repeat as champions. Bruce Arians’ second shot at a title as a head coach. But from a team perspective, neither the Kansas City Chiefs nor the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have been Super Bowl mainstays. They’ve combined for just three titles and six Super Bowl appearances since 1967.

Though Kansas City won it all in 2019, the Chiefs hadn’t reached the Super Bowl since the 1969 season when they were still a part of the AFL. They beat the NFL’s Vikings 23-7 in Super Bowl IV after previously losing to the Packers in the first Super Bowl in 1967. The Chiefs have enjoyed a six-year playoff streak under Reid, though, and three consecutive AFC title appearances with both Reid and Mahomes since 2018.

As for the Buccaneers, they reached the Super Bowl just once in franchise history before this season. Jon Gruden coached the Brad Johnson-led Bucs to a Super Bowl XXXVII win over the Raiders thanks to a star-studded defense in 2002. They hadn’t even made the playoffs since 2007 prior to this season. Now led by Brady and Arians, the Bucs could topple the Chiefs and double up on their title count.

Neither team holds a candle to the Patriots and Steelers, though. While Brady will be fighting for his seventh championship, his old Patriots team – and the one where he won his first six – are tied with the Steelers for most Super Bowl titles with six. While the Patriots won with Brady and Bill Belichick all in the 21st century, the Steelers won four titles in the 70s with Terry Bradshaw and two in the mid-2000s with Ben Roethlisberger. The Cowboys and 49ers are tied for third with five titles apiece – Dallas won twice in the 70s and three times in the 90s, while San Francisco won four between 1981-1989 and then another in 1994.

Mahomes and Brady are the focal points this time around, though. Both are building legacies every season in different ways, and the winner of Super Bowl LV will add to their own personal career trophy cases.
