Super Bowl points scored by each college all time

Over the Super Bowl’s first 56 editions there have been a total of 2,593 points scored.

Some of those points were scored by superstars; some were scored by incredibly unlikely heroes.

For every Tom Brady or Emmitt Smith there seems to be a Max McGee or Dwight Smith who had a huge moment or score to redirect the final outcome of a Super Bowl.

Have you ever wondered where all the Super Bowl heroes played their college football?

Super Bowl LVII had two new college programs finally get on the scoreboard. Jalen Hurts scoring three touchdowns and a two-point conversion were the first 20 points ever scored in Super Bowl play by a former Alabama player. The same goes for Missouri, which finally got on the Super Bowl scoreboard after Nick Bolton’s touchdown.

Two players also officially scored in the big game but didn’t play college ball.

So where did they all go?

Remember, touchdown passes don’t count in the record books as a touchdown scored for a quarterback – please don’t kill the messenger!

143. Coast Guard: 1 point

Kicker Curt Knight’s extra point for Washington in Super Bowl VII earned the Coast Guard its one and only all-time point scored in the Super Bowl.

Auburn and Baylor have had players score but neither program has reached the actual end zone. Al Del Greco (Auburn) scored four points for the Titans in Super Bowl XXXIV. Matt Bryant (Baylor) scored four in Atlanta’s collapse back in Super Bowl LI.

136. Bowling Green: 5 points

Almost one-third of the programs to have had a former player score in a Super Bowl have had six total points scored. When you think about it that is hardly a surprise considering how few of these games players ever play in (unless they’re Tom Brady). Here are the 41 programs to have six points to their names in the Super Bowl:

Angelo State, Arkansas, Augustana, Austin Peay, Bethune-Cookman, Central Michigan, Colorado Mesa, Delaware, East Carolina, Fresno State, Furman, Harvard, Houston, Iowa, Lambuth, Livingstone, Maryland, Miami (Ohio), Midwestern State, Mississippi State, Missouri, Missouri Southern, Monmouth, Mount Union, Navy, Nevada, New Mexico, Northern Iowa, Portland State, Prairie View, Rice, Santa Clara, SE Louisiana, SMU, South Carolina State, Southern Miss, UMass, Villanova, Wabash, Western Carolina, Winston-Salem State

93. San Diego State: 7 points

Troy Babbitt-USA TODAY Sports

San Diego State has seen one former player find the end zone in a Super Bowl, but it isn’t probably your first guess as to who it was. Marshall Faulk was held relatively quiet in his two Super Bowl appearances with the Rams but receiver Ronnie Smith scored to give the Rams a third-quarter lead against the Steelers in Super Bowl XIV.

92. Boston College: 8 points

Mark Chmura scored a two-point conversion in Super Bowl XXXI and a touchdown in XXXII to earn all eight points ever scored in the big game by a former Boston College player.

T-90. Kentucky, UTEP: 9 points

George Blanda (above) was the first Kentucky player to score in a Super Bowl, hitting a pair of extra points in Super Bowl II. Chris Jacke of UTEP scored all nine of his career Super Bowl points kicking for the Packers in XXXI.

89. Montana State: 11 points

Malcolm Emmons- USA TODAY Sports

Hall of Fame kicker and onetime Montana State star Jan Stenerud scored 11 points in the 23-7 win by the Chiefs in Super Bowl IV against the Minnesota Vikings. That is 11 more points than the Vikings have scored in the first half of the four Super Bowls they’ve appeared in.

T-65. 24 programs: 12 points

Twenty-four programs have had players combine to score 12 points in Super Bowl history: Akron,  Cal-Riverside, Delaware State, Eastern Washington, Grambling, Iowa State, Kent State, Lane, Marshall, Mississippi, Northeastern, Philander Smith, Rutgers, Stephen F. Austin, Tennessee State, Texas State, Troy, Tulsa, UNLV, UT-Arlington, Wake Forest, West Texas A&M, West Virginia and William & Mary.

The fun part of this list for me was when I’d see a school I had never heard of. That was the case in this list: Philander Smith popped out to me. It is a private, historically black college, in Little Rock, Arkansas. Running back Elijah Pitts of the Green Bay Packers scored two touchdowns in the first Super Bowl after being a 13th-round draft pick.

64. Louisiana: 13 points

Louisiana‘s Brandon Stokley scored a touchdown in the Ravens’ 34-7 victory over the New York Giants in Super Bowl XXXV. Kicker Rafael Septien kicked four extra points and a 27-yard field goal for Dallas during Super Bowl XIII.

Programs with 16 points in Super Bowl play: No college affiliation, Arizona State, Temple and Youngstown State

T-50. Hawaii, Texas, Utah: 17 points

Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

Did you know that no former Texas Longhorns have ever scored a touchdown in the Super Bowl? Kickers have wowed the big day for them however, highlighted by Justin Tucker who scored 10 points in the Ravens’ Super Bowl XLVII victory over the 49ers. Kicker Matt Gay scored five of Utah’s 17 all-time Super Bowl points in LVI when he helped the Rams to victory.

From January of 1985 until February of 2022, William “The Refrigerator” Perry was the only Clemson player to have scored a touchdown in the Super Bowl. That changed in Super Bowl LVI: Tee Higgins scored twice for the Bengals in a losing effort.

Former James Madison kicker Scott Norwood scored 11 points in two Super Bowls but is best known for the three he didn’t score at the end of XXV.

Five programs have had former players score 30 points in Super Bowl history: Cincinnati, Michigan, Oklahoma State, Syracuse and Wyoming

Remember, the NFL officially counts passing touchdowns as being scored by the person who caught the ball. That’s why Tom Brady didn’t launch Michigan higher.

26. Georgia Tech: 31 points

Harrison Butker’s eight points in Super Bowl LVII boosted Georgia Tech’s to more than 30 points all time.

25. LSU: 32 points

T-19. NC State, Wisconsin: 38 points

Bob Donnan-USA TODAY Sports

NC State and Wisconsin have both had players combine for 38 points. Twenty-six of Wisconsin’s are from former Patriots running back James White with 18 alone coming in Super Bowl LI against the Falcons.

18. UCLA: 39 points

UCLA has had 39 points scored by former players in Super Bowl history. It wasn’t the biggest touchdown, but few have been as photogenic as DeShaun Foster’s for the Carolina Panthers in XXXVIII.

T-15. Arizona, Ohio State, USC: 42 points

Arizona, Ohio State and USC check in with 42 points in Super Bowl history. Arizona can thank Rob Gronkowski for carrying the load. Ohio State and USC can certainly thank Steelers wide receivers for being big parts of their lists.

14. Oklahoma: 44 points

Jasen Vinlove-USA TODAY Sports

Oklahoma doesn’t get any points for Barry Switzer coaching the Cowboys to a Super Bowl XXX victory, but it had 12 from running back Damein Williams of the Chiefs in LIV.

T-12. Illinois and Michigan State: 45 points

Matthew Emmons-USA TODAY Sports

Michigan State and Illinois check in inside the top 15 in all-time Super Bowl points scored. The Spartans had no bigger points than the six Plaxico Burress scored in the Giants’ upset win over the unbeaten Patriots in Super Bowl XLII. Illinois has had backs Rashard Mendenhall, Pierre Thomas and Howard Griffith find their way into Super Bowl end zones.

11. Mississippi Valley State: 48 points

Memphis cracks the top 10 in large part to Stephen Gostkowski who has scored 33 points in six career Super Bowl appearances.

7. Georgia: 61 points

Georgia checks in seventh as the record-setting three touchdown day from Terrell Davis (above) in Super Bowl XXXII played a big part in it getting there.

6. Texas Tech: 62 points

Manny Rubio-USA TODAY Sports

Texas Tech is near the top of this list and is the college of unlikely Super Bowl hero Timmy Smith (above), who scored two touchdowns in Super Bowl XXII for Washington. Smith remains the only player in Super Bowl history to rush for 200 yards in a single game.

5. Notre Dame: 64 points

Ricky Watters (above) scored three touchdowns in Super Bowl XXIX. The last Notre Dame player to score in the Super Bowl was wide receiver David Givens who did so in both XXXVIII and XXXIX.

4. California: 66 points

Andrew Weber-USA TODAY Sports

California‘s Marshawn Lynch scored two touchdowns in his Super Bowl career, but, like Scott Norwood, is perhaps better known for points he didn’t score, or wasn’t given the chance to because of Pete Carroll, to end Super Bowl XLIX.

3. Penn State: 81 points

Malcolm Emmons-USA TODAY Sports Copyright 1979 Malcolm Emmons

Penn State checks in third. Had the 49ers beaten the Eagles in the NFC Championship, we might have had a change atop this list. However, the 49ers didn’t, which means Robbie Gould did not participate in Super Bowl LVII.  Franco Harris scored four touchdowns in Super Bowl play, and brothers Matt and Chris Bahr each kicked for 17 points to pace the Nittany Lions on Super Bowl Sunday.

2. Florida: 82 points

USA TODAY NETWORK

Florida checks in second overall in large part to Emmitt Smith who ran for five career Super Bowl touchdowns. Kicker Evan McPherson’s eight points in Super Bowl LVI were the most recent scored by a former Gator.
