'The Super Mario Bros. Movie' surpasses $1 billion globally

Less than a month after its North American release, “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” has crossed the $1 billion mark at the global box office.
The Nintendo-Illumintion-Universal collaboration, which premiered in the U.S. on April 5, is now the first film of 2023 that has garnered over $1 billion worldwide.
It is also the fifth film released during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic that has reached the $1 billion milestone, with the other four films being “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” “Top Gun: Maverick,” “Jurassic World Dominion” and “Avatar: The Way of Water.”
“The Super Mario Bros. Movie," which stars Chris Pratt as the voice behind Mario, broke the 2023 box office with its $377.6 million global debut last month.

In its first five days, the animated video game adaptation, which had a budget of $100 million, amassed $204.6 million domestically and $173 million from 70 overseas markets, including Mexico ($27.4 million), the U.K. and Ireland ($19.6 million), Germany ($14 million), China ($12 million) and France ($10.4 million).
In addition to Pratt, “The Super Mario Bros. Movie’s” star-studded cast includes Charlie Day, Anya Taylor-Joy, Jack Black, Keegan-Michael Key, Seth Rogen and Fred Armisen.
The hit film, directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, has notably bested Disney’s “Frozen II” by scoring the biggest animated opening of all time.
