Super Smash Bros. Ultimate tournament set for Hall of Fame Village

CANTON − A "Chain Grab Super Smash Bros. Ultimate" video gaming tournament is coming to the Hall of Fame Village powered by Johnson Controls.

The esports tournament will take place Dec. 11 and is open to players 13 years old and older. It will feature both singles and doubles competitions and a $1,000 pot bonus, the Hall of Fame Resort & Entertainment Co. said Friday.

The tournament is being presented by the company's Gold Summit Gaming division. This will mark its first esports event at the Hall of Fame Village.

Participants can register at https://www.start.gg/tournament/chain-grab/details. The entry fee is $25 with additional bracket fees. Doors will open at 9 a.m. for the tournament. The doubles competition begins at noon.

Tournament will be at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium

The tournament will take place on the Club level and in the VIP Lounge of Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium. Players of different levels will compete on 30 high-definition monitors with highlighted moments broadcast live on https://www.twitch.tv/goldsummit and the stadium’s scoreboards.

Super Smash Bros., a fighting game, was originally released in 1999 and has seen six installments. The newest title, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, released December 2018, has sold more than 28 million units.

"Chain grab" is a reference to a series of grabs and throws in the video game.

The Canton tournament is attracting interest from top gamers throughout the state, the Hall of Fame Village said. Among them is Stephen Schmidt (also known as "DoorStop"), a Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Zero Suit Samus player who is ranked No. 1 in Ohio

"What better backdrop than The Village to conduct a tournament like this where the semblance of inclusiveness, healthy competition, drive for excellence, and having fun intersect."

Hall of Fame Resort & Entertainment Co. is developing the Hall of Fame Village, a more than $600 million project to create a football-themed campus and attractions around the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Already completed are Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium, the ForeverLawn Sports Complex, Constellation Center for Excellence and the Center for Performance. Construction continues on the Fan Engagement Zone retail area and infrastructure work has started on a 180-room hotel and indoor water park. Play-Action Plaza is another attraction, which includes a zip line and giant wheel amusement park-style ride.
