Dec. 22—SOMERS — Samuel Galloway has been named the town's new school superintendent and, pending successful contract negotiations, will officially take over the post on April 1.

Galloway will replace Paul C. Gagliarducci, who has served as interim superintendent since Brian P. Czapla retired in June after five years.

The Board of Education voted to offer the contract to Galloway during a special meeting on Wednesday.

Gagliarducci said Galloway comes to Somers with an extensive and somewhat nontraditional background. He has spent time in the U.S. Army and retired with a rank of lieutenant. He also served with the Connecticut State Police and retired with a rank of sergeant.

Galloway began his educational career as an elementary school teacher. He has been a middle school assistant principal and principal, and a high school principal. He received several awards, including the 2018 Outstanding School Administrator Award from the University of Connecticut Neag School of Education Alumni Board.

He has earned a number of graduate degrees and received his doctorate from Central Connecticut State University.

Galloway currently serves as the director of talent and management for Bristol schools.
