Four years after taking on the role, Oxnard School District Superintendent Karling Aguilera-Fort will leave the district at the end of June, the district's board president announced Friday.

In a letter to staff, families and community members connected with the 14,000-student, 21-school district, board president Veronica Robles-Solis said Aguilera-Fort had accepted a leadership role in San Francisco Unified School District.

"While we will miss Dr. Aguilera-Fort's invaluable contributions to the Oxnard School District, we sincerely congratulate him on this next opportunity and wish him every success in the next chapter," she wrote.

Aguilera-Fort's move marks a return home to a district where he served for years before he worked a multi-year stint at El Rancho Unified School District in Pico Rivera, then took on the leading Oxnard School District in 2019.

The board met in a special closed session meeting Friday morning and appointed Ana DeGenna, the district's associate superintendent of educational services, as interim superintendent starting July 1, Robles-Solis' letter says.

DeGenna, the board president wrote, has a "deep understanding" of the district and expertise that make her an "ideal candidate" to continue Aguilera-Fort's work.
