Supernatural star Jensen Ackles has opened up about the cancellation of the spin-off show The Winchesters, thanking fans for their continued support of the series.

After Nexstar took over the CW Network, there was a massive crackdown on scripted content and The Winchesters was one of the casualties. The series ended after only one season.

Now, in a statement on Twitter, Ackles, who played Dean Winchester in both Supernatural and The Winchesters, has expressed his disappointment about the news.

"To all of you who watched, followed, and supported this story, THANK YOU. And to all those who brought this show to life… I couldn’t be more proud of what we all did together. But as they say… timing is everything," Ackels wrote.

"With a massive Network shift coupled with an industry strike… welp… that’s some unfortunate timing. Sleep well dear @WinchestersOnCW… until we meet again. Somewhere down the road."

Ackles alluded to the ongoing WGA writers' strike in the US, which he believes may have contributed to the show's premature end.

In a statement at the time of the cancellation, which also announced the end of Kung Fu, the network explained: "As we reimagine the new CW, we had to make some tough programming decisions. We thank our partners at Warner Bros. and the casts and creative teams of Kung Fu and The Winchesters for all their hard work, creativity, and dedication."

The news is particularly disappointing to creator Robbie Thompson, who hoped for a Supernatural-verse expansion. He explained his feelings on the idea back in March this year.

"We really thought that if we did this the right way, you could really open up the Supernatural universe for a whole lot of stories. There's so many more stories to tell and death has never ever stopped those characters," Thompson said.

Ackles' tweet comes after he previously tried to set up a petition to save The Winchesters following the cancellation but, alas, it didn't work.

The Winchesters, Kung Fu and Walker: Independence all aired on The CW in the US.
