Supernatural's Jensen Ackles has reacted to The Winchesters' cancellation by setting up a petition hashtag in an attempt to save the show.

In light of the prequel's discontinuation announced by The CW's owner Nexstar this week, the Dean Winchester actor took to Twitter to rally the troops.

Retweeting an Entertainment Weekly article confirming the news, he wrote to his fans today (May 12): "Looks like we got work to do. #SaveTheWinchesters #spnfamily."

Soon after, the star reacted to a Deadline report suggesting Warner Bros. Television is now looking to find The Winchesters a brand-new home, posting: "Let's go!!!! #SaveTheWinchesters."

Meanwhile, a clip has also surfaced of the show's cast urging people to echo #SaveTheWinchesters across their social platforms.

Appearing in the video from his home, Ackles told the camera: "Alright, you know what to do... let's blow the top of this thing, show what this fandom's made of.

"Let's find The Winchesters a new home, because you know what? We've still got work to do."

The Winchesters wasn't the only show to be axed, with Kung Fu starring Olivia Liang also suffering the same fate yesterday.

Nexstar's initial statement read: "As we reimagine the new CW, we had to make some tough programming decisions. We thank our partners at Warner Bros. and the casts and creative teams of Kung Fu and The Winchesters for all their hard work, creativity and dedication."

Walker: Independence has also been cancelled by The CW.

The Winchesters aired on The CW in the US.
