Supreme Court to make decision on Roe v. Wade possibly this week; What that could mean for Ohioans

The Supreme Court is expected to make a decision, possibly sometime this week, on whether or not to overturn Roe v Wade.

If the court case is overturned, the decision to ban abortions would become the state’s choice.

News Center 7′s Kayla McDermott spoke with pro-choice activists about why Roe v Wade should not be overturned.

Shannon Isom CEO of YWCA in Dayton said, “It just disregards a safety net that many women have had for decades.”

The likelihood of self-imposed abortions would increase if abortion becomes illegal, and that can be dangerous.

“It’ll put us at risk. And I think we’ll see even more deaths than what we already see with infant maternal health,” said Isom.

Not everyone can travel to other states for a legal abortion, and Isom told us, “In this specific area, women and children, black, poor that are still dying during childbirth. So we’re not there with reproductive justice.”

We also spoke with Dayton Right to Life Executive Director Margie Christie about the other side’s point of view.

Christie told us a women’s right to her own body is not sound because of science.

“It’s not your body; you’re actually taking the life of another body,” Christie said.

When asked for her stance on women performing abortions on themselves or traveling out of state, Christie said, “What we want to do is give women more time to think about it, and they’re not rushed or pressured in any way. They tend to embrace, you know, fulfilling the pregnancy.”

For mothers who give birth and don’t have the means to care for the child, Christie said, “We don’t murder kids at one or two because, oh, they’re in the wrong zip code. Wrong neighborhood their parents are abusive we still try to work with all of that”

Christie went on to say there are free services to mothers available after the baby comes to help further help take care of the child.
