Here are the top five stories today in Raleigh:

  1. The trial over North Carolina's voting maps began Monday after the State Supreme Court expedited the case to determine constitutionality of the maps. Critics of the maps say that with North Carolina voters divided 50% Democrat and 50% Republican, maps should reflect that. Supporters of the redraw say that the Republican controlled legislator were transparent and lawful in their redistricting process. (abc11)

  2. Part of Wade Avenue including the Wade Avenue westbound ramp off northbound Oberlin Road and Oberlin Road North exit ramp/Annapolis Drive from westbound Wade Avenue will be closed down for the next three weeks. The closure comes as part of a waterline improvement project drivers should anticipate traffic delays in the area. (CBS17)

  3. Overnight storms leading into Monday caused power outages, slick roads, and flash flooding. Several Wake County schools made the decision to close down early due to outages persisting into the day and dropping temperatures. (WRAL) Several COVID-19 testing sites also made the decision to temporarily close down due to weather. (CBS17)

  4. One man is facing charges after an altercation inside the Food Lion in N. Raleigh Boulevard led to gunshots in the parking lot. The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon and one was injured after being shot in the foot. (CBS17)

  5. Holiday travel issues are persisting beyond the holidays. Early on Monday morning more than a dozen flights at RDU were either delayed or cancelled. Winter storms and omicron variant are continuing to impact staffing and flights. (WRAL)
