Accessing abortion services in Pennsylvania can be difficult depending where in the state a woman lives.

With the verified leak of a draft opinion by the US Supreme Court in a major abortion case, some worry about further limited access, but the court has said the draft does not represent its final view.

Nearly half of all women in Pennsylvania live in a county without an abortion clinic, according to the international Guttmacher Institute. Some 85% of Pennsylvania counties have no such clinic, the institute reported.

In 2019, the CDC reported 31,260 abortions conducted in Pennsylvania with 57% reported in women ages 20 to 29. Less than 8% abortions involved teens. In 88% of cases, female patients were unmarried.

Under Pennsylvania law, a patient must speak with a counselor and then wait 24 hours before terminating a pregnancy. Government-funded health plans only cover the cost of abortions in cases of rape or incest. It is illegal to terminate a pregnancy after 24 weeks except in cases that threaten the life of the mother, under state law.
