Sure, Paul Rudd and Jason Sudeikis can play ball. But nothing like Patrick Mahomes

Well, yeah, sure, you’d figure that Ted Lasso himself, Jason Sudeikis, would do all right playing some Big Slick softball. Sudeikis, who used to play college basketball, got the first at-bat and soon scored the first run in Friday’s celebrity game at Kauffman Stadium.

Not to be outdone, fellow Big Slick host Paul “Ant-Man” Rudd showed off his Avenger superpowers by getting on base with an infield hit and soon scoring.

But, as may be expected, the true athleticism was demonstrated by, well, the athletes. Chiefs quarterback turned Big Slick shortstop Patrick Mahomes made a no-look, behind-the-back throw to first to get Big Slick host Eric Stonestreet out. He played deep to catch host Rob Riggle’s pop fly. And, of course, he hit a home run.*

*A home run in this game meant he hit it out of the infield.

Sudeikis, Rudd, Stonestreet and Riggle were the hometown hosts, along with Heidi Gardner, for this annual fundraiser for Children’s Mercy. (Host David Koechner couldn’t make it this year.)

Their 40-some guests included “Stranger Things” monster-fighter Finn Wolfhard, who co-stars with Rudd in the new “Ghostbusters” movies. He hit a single with ease. “Saturday Night Live” alum Will Forte scored the game’s first home run. And magician Blake Vogt, who the day before had entertained the young patients at Children’s Mercy, showed off his skills by getting blindfolded — and then getting a single.

Big Slick Celebrity Weekend began Friday morning with a press conference at the hospital, followed by a game of “Friendly Feud.” The festivities were set to continue at 8 p.m. Saturday with a Party & Show at the T-Mobile Center.

In its 13 years, Big Slick has donated more than $17 million to Children’s Mercy.
