Surfer scientist helps map reefs for conservation

STORY: This surfing scientist is

catching waves for ocean research

He's using his wave skills to help

3D map the planet's premier surf breaks

(Cliff Kapono, Arizona State University assistant professor)

"Our lab is looking to map the best waves around the planet, we believe that finding these resilient reefs, as we like to call them, that also have the best waves, by learning more about them, we can have a better understanding on how to influence policy change or better management practices as the climate changes in our lifetime."

His team utilizes a global pool of scientists

and athletes who are skilled surfers

to find new methods to study coral

health and reef formation

"I think being a surfer and a scientist as an occupation involves equal parts trying to surf the best waves on the planet, but also spend a significant time trying to figure out how we can protect these waves as well."
